Shampoo strips away dirt, oil, and buildup from your scalp. While this may sound like a good thing, it can be very damaging to your hair.
Conventional shampoos use harsh detergents, called sulfates, to remove impurities from your hair. These are stripped away with the oils from your scalp leaving it dry and frizzy.
The oils found on our scalps are there for a reason: they protect and moisturize our hair so that it doesn’t become brittle or break off easily. Conventional shampoos take these essential nutrients out of our hair leaving us with nothing but straw!
Using a moisturizing shampoo like ours makes a huge difference in how your hair feels after you wash it. But how you use your shampoo matters just as much as what shampoo you use!
Here are some reasons why your hair may be dry after using shampoo and how to fix it.
You’re not properly rinsing your hair after shampooing.
If you want to avoid drying out your hair on wash days, make sure you rinse out your shampoo properly. Use cool water, not hot. Hot water can damage the delicate proteins in your hair and scalp that keep it moisturized and strong.
Avoid rubbing your hair with a towel after rinsing the shampoo from your strands—this can lead to breakage and frizziness over time. Instead, gently blot (or squeeze) excess moisture from your locks until they’re less damp than before rinsing them.
You are overwashing your hair.
An obvious reason your shampoo might be drying out your hair is that you’re washing it too often. If you have oily hair, it might be tempting to wash it every day. But overwashing can strip the natural oils from your scalp and cause dry flaky skin.
